International Management Board 2008

Hilary Sears, Chair
Business School: Cranfield School of Management

Hilary Sears has both private and public sector experience at senior levels. She most recently completed a 15 month secondment in the Cabinet Office where she headed the Brokerage Unit, which offers career support to senior civil servants across Whitehall, and inputs into the succession planning and talent management programmes.

After a first career in advertising (with the likes of the Interpublic and J Walter Thompson groups), and marketing with Johnson and Johnson, Hilary took an MBA at Cranfield. She then moved into executive search, working for both the largest firm in the world (Korn Ferry), and also one of the smallest (her own one-person firm!). She has more than 20 years of executive search and leadership assessment experience, leading assignments for local and global clients across general management, marketing and sales, finance and human resources.

As a professional, she built a reputation for quality, tenacity and strong client relationships, and represented A T Kearney Executive Search on the European Board of the Association of Executive Search Consultants (the professional body). Externally, she has maintained an involvement in the MBA environment: she served as Vice-Chairman of the Association of MBAs, sits on the Board of the Cranfield Management Association, and has presented at the Association of MBAs Employers Forum, and at a number of business schools.  She has just been elected as Chairman of the Association of MBAs, and is keen to reach out to both schools and students.

She has also been active in trying to promote women onto boards, speaking at conferences, chairing City Women’s Network, sitting on the boards of International Women’s Forum and UK Forum, and recently chairing their Board Initiative.

Since then, her work has increasingly focused on the prevention of stress in organisations and she has come to equate its management with good management. She is also currently undertaking doctoral research into the impact of stress on the culture of an organisation. Her work includes workplace surveys, facilitation of solutions, stress awareness workshops, both open and customised, and mentoring for individuals.

Katie took on the new Chair of the West Country in January 2002 and is still enjoying the experience, particularly meeting new people.
